Friday Five: Reminders to keep you sane when self-doubt attacks!

What's on my mind today is self-doubt. You know that monster that feeds on worry and fear and treats your negative feelings as pure delicacy. Yesterday I finished a first draft of my work-in-progress. For the first hour or so afterwards I felt kind of high on the delight of actually finding my way from the beginning to the end of the story. Then doubt hit. And I started to wonder if the whole idea was ridiculous. If it was too this or too that or not enough of one thing or another. I started comparing it to other books on the market and picking out all the ways it didn't stand up. By this morning I was a mess of sadness and worry and fatigue. And then I took a deep breath and read through the entire manuscript. And it didn't suck. And it hung together. And there's work ahead. But it's doable. So today's list is what to tell yourself when self-doubt is nipping at your heels, or swallowing you whole.

1. (Paraphrased from a greeting card): You have something to share with the world that is different from what anyone else has to share. Don't deprive the world of your gift.

2. (This one comes from my friend Fred): "Don't compare your insides to other people's outsides."

3. (This one is a magnet on my fridge): "Trust your crazy ideas." Really, it's okay to follow the crazy ones. Sometimes they lead you to the best possible place.

4. (From my journal): Let go of your hold on the fear of ruin, the vow of poverty, the worry that nothing will ever turn out right. Fall into Trust.

5. (From my heart): Follow your passion. It's the whisper that's telling you what you're meant to be doing.

Just don't give up. Know that what feels hopeless today may feel shiny and new tomorrow. Self-doubt can destroy you. But only if you let it.

Have a beautiful weekend. Do something kind for yourself. You deserve it
