Friday Five: Disney World :D
As this is posting, I'm probably just arriving at my hotel in Disney World after taking the red-eye last night. (Why don't I ever remember how much I hate red-eyes?) I'm hoping to catch a couple hours of sleep before meeting up with a great group of authors (Lee McKenzie, Carrie Ryan, Kurtis Scaletta, Erin Dionne, and Cynthea Liu) for lunch and then a presentation at NCTE (National Council of Teachers of English). I'm super excited to be going and to be participating in this conference. I'm also really sad that my family isn't able to join me. I mean -- what fun is Disney World without your kids and best friend/husband? I'm determined to make the best of it, though. Here are the highlights of what I have planned so far:
1. The presentation with the authors I mentioned is on Friday afternoon. We're going to be talking about "Why 'Ain't' and 'Gotta' Gotta Be in Today's Books For Kids and Teens." This is a topic that is near and dear to my heart. I'll be talking about the use of dialect in Breathing and in other YA books and why it's important to portray it in the text.
2. Several lunches and dinners and drinks with a variety of authors, some of whom I've met, some I only know online. So that should be fun!
3. Saturday is a free day for me. So a couple of us are trying to decide whether to go into Disney or to trek over to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter! I'm hoping for Potter, but we'll see how it goes. My mind is going straight to holiday gift buying! Not to mention, OMG Hogwarts! Hogsmeade! Diagon Alley! Butterbeer!
4. Saturday night after dinner a bunch of us are going to see Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows! So excited!
5. Then I wrap it up Sunday with another presentation. This is a roundtable discussion with attendees and authors: Joy Preble, Janet Fox, Sydney Salter, Danielle Joseph, Lauren Bjorkman, JT Dutton, Edie Hemingway, and Rosanne Parry. We'll be discussing "The Other Happily Ever After: Transforming and Empowering Readers Through a Retooling of the Female Hero Journey." The focus of my section will be on "Happily Ever After vs. Stronger Ever After Endings." Kind of interesting that we'll be talking about this in Disney World
So that's where I'll be this weekend. Hope you have fun plans, too!
