"Look to Your Heart"

In lieu of the Friday Five today, I'm sharing a little something I wrote recently. It was inspired by an Anne Sexton poem called "Not so. Not so." Though I'm not a religious person, I do refer to God here. Feel free to replace that word with whatever word works for you: Spirit, Universe, Higher Power, etc.

"'Look to your heart,'" the voice inside me whispered.
"It knows the trust you long for.
It knows the answers you seek.
Each time you've felt abandoned, forlorn,
did not everything work out for the truly best?
Would you have had it any other way?

Let go of grasping, needing, worry, and fear.
We are all always cared for, held, nurtured.
Though you would think, from looking at us,
that we were each on our own,
frenzied with the struggle of survival.
How foolish it seems when looking with the eyes of the soul,
how foolish.

We longed for evidence,
for proof of God's gentle caress.
And it showed itself in grace and in glory.
And then we doubted over and again,
wanting more proof, none of it ever enough.
When really the only proof we ever needed
sat right inside.

'Look to your heart,'" the voice said.
"Everything you seek, you shall find.
It's been there all this time."

Happy Holidays!
