Friday Five: Patience
I suck at patience. I always have. My bedroom walls as a teen were covered in countdown sheets, marking off the days to the next exciting thing (usually a visit with my long-distance boyfriend). As an adult, I have tried hard to unlearn this impatience, to appreciate each step of the path for its own sake. And I'm better at it than I used to be. But basically I still suck.
Sometimes I think life directed me toward being a writer because there is so much patience necessary -- a way for me to learn what is hardest for me. I always want to rush ahead to the next stage. I have to remind myself over and over to slow down and just be in this moment and not worry so much about the next one. I'm not even talking about the waiting to hear back from agents or editors part. Sometimes waiting on story elements to develop can be maddening, or being patient while revising, wanting to rush ahead and send it out. There's always the next thing ahead. And patience can be challenging. So here are some words of wisdom about patience.
So there you go, words of wisdom from five amazing human beings who accomplished great things in their lives. They make this patience stuff sound like kind of a cool thing, huh?Okay, I'm heading into the ring, ready to face down my demon, Impatience. Wish me luck

You and me both. I am TERRIBLE with patience. It's something I really need to work on and like you, I have to have patience in this business.

I think we may have chosen this business of writing books in error, Cheryl. Either that or patience is what we were destined to improve in this lifetime.
