Friday Five: Why You Shouldn't Feel Guilty for Taking Time Off

I love writing.  And I love the sense of accomplishment that comes with getting my work done. But I also know that there are times when we all need to step away and take a breather. I often talk with other authors who feel guilty taking that time. And sometimes I feel that way, too. But summer is made for play time! Many of us have kids at home during the summer. And it can be harder to find writing time. So this week's Friday Five is a list of reasons why you shouldn't feel guilty for taking some much deserved time off.

1. The story, or whatever you might be working on, needs time to brew, like a full-bodied cup of tea. Time is a necessary ingredient. It's amazing how much work actually gets done when you step away and give the ideas time to steep.

2. Summer is a great time to enjoy family and friends. And they deserve our time, too! There are so many fun things to do during the summer. Don't miss out

3. Being out in nature or visiting someplace new or even going to a theme park are all excellent ways to fill the well. When we're being creative, we're drawing on the well over and over. Take some time out to fill the well with new experiences or with people watching or with adventures.

4. When we take time away from the work, we also tend to come back with fresh eyes. We're better able to see what isn't working and why. That time away can be crucial to solving problems we didn't even realize were present.

5. Finally, time away from the work gives us time to just be, which every one of us needs on occasion. It helps restore the balance of who we are. Balance is key to a happy life!

So find some moments this summer to step away from whatever you're working on and enjoy the delicious freedom of summer vacation like you did when you were a kid!

And one bit of news before I sign off, I'm happy to announce I have a short story coming out in an anthology about firsts with the 2009 Debs. Twenty-five authors are participating, all of them hugely talented! Isn't the cover adorable?

Have a great week and Happy Summer
